It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Michael Furjanic on 29 November, aged 82 years.
Michael was a past player, President, Patron and Life Member of Glenorchy Knights FC.
He began as a committee member and player in 1959 the year after he arrived in Tasmania from Croatia and has been involved with our club ever since.
His contribution to our club has been outstanding and he is a current Life Member and former Patron from 1997 to 2012.
Michael sponsored our club through his tailoring business and sponsored the Michael Tailors Cup in Hobart for 12 years.
He has proudly forged the Croatian identity in Tasmania through Soccer and was awarded an OAM in 2001 for his contribution to the Croatian community in Tasmania.
Not only did he sponsor our club his entire working career, but he also obtained other sponsors to ensure our financial stability. He has sold thousands of raffle tickets and sought memberships for our club for many years. In the early days he even made playing strips.
Michael also made a significant contribution nationally, establishing the Croatian Soccer Association of Australia in 1974 and serving as its President for 15 continuous years. He was awarded honorary President for life in 1989.
Michael created the annual Croatian Soccer Tournament in 1975 which is still going strong 44 years later, the Miss Croatia Australia pageant and organised successful tours of Metros Croatia, the North American Champions, to Australia in 1976 and return tours by Sydney Croatia in 1978.
Michael’s drive, support and passion for football and the Glenorchy Knights is not only outstanding but inspiring.
His legacy for the club will be remembered always. Počivaj u miru, Rest in Peace Michael.
